Airbag module crash data reset

After a collision the SRS module stores the crash event and locks itself, even once the airbags and pretensioners have been replaced. We clear the crash data and fault codes on 12 944 modules from 63 makes – over OBD or on the bench, with tracked courier shipping across the EU. Enter the part number from the label.

What crash data is and why the light stays on after the repair

The airbag control module (SRS, RCM, ACSM, SDM – depending on the make) monitors the crash sensors and fires the airbags and belt pretensioners in a collision. At the same moment it writes the event to its internal memory: severity and direction of the impact, which components fired, speed and belt status. This record is the crash data. The codes each make uses for it are collected in our article crash data fault codes by make. From then on the module locks itself: the airbag light stays on and the system is not ready for the next crash, even with new airbags fitted. A deployed module is not scrap – the hardware is almost always fine. What stops it is the record, and that is exactly what we clear at memory level.

On older modules the record sits in a separate EEPROM (95xxx, 93Cxx); on newer ones it is in the flash of the microcontroller (Renesas RH850, Infineon TriCore, ST SPC56). That is why some modules are reset through the diagnostic port and others only on the bench, connected directly to the board. Which method applies to your module follows from the hardware part number on the label.

When we reset and when we do not

We reset crash data only after the deployed components – airbags, pretensioners, crash sensors – have been replaced. Before that we read all fault codes of the module and tell you what needs replacing. A module with an erased record but old components is dangerous: in the next crash the system will not deploy. That is why we never erase the record “just to switch the light off”.

When the board was burnt by a short circuit in the crash, a reset does not help. Then we source a module with the same hardware part number and transfer the data, or code a new module to the vehicle.

How it works

  1. Check the part number in the search or send us a photo of the label. We tell you the method (OBD or bench), the time and the price.
  2. Order through the form or by phone – no prepayment. You receive the address and packing instructions.
  3. Send the module by tracked courier from anywhere in the EU, or bring the car to Yambol, Bulgaria for an OBD reset.
  4. We read the module – identification, fault codes, crash record. We make a full backup before any work. We clear the crash data and the fault codes.
  5. Test and return – the light goes out after the self-check. The module is shipped back the same or the next working day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a crash data reset cost?

Over OBD from 30 to 60 €, on the bench from 60 to 150 € depending on the module. We confirm the exact price from the part number before any work. If the module cannot be recovered, you do not pay for the attempt.

How long does it take?

Over OBD usually within an hour on site. On the bench – the same or the next working day after we receive the module. We tell you in advance which method applies to your part number.

Do I need a new module after a crash?

In most cases no. The module is fine and only keeps the crash record. It is replaced only when the board was damaged by a short circuit in the crash or when the manufacturer explicitly requires a new unit.

Can you clear the crash data without replacing the airbags?

We do not. The module stores the record because the components have fired. We reset it only once the airbags and pretensioners have been replaced; otherwise the system will not protect the occupants in the next crash.

Where do I find the part number?

The module is usually under the centre console, under a front seat or behind the dashboard. The label carries the vehicle manufacturer part number (for example 95910-3Z000 on Hyundai, 77960-… on Honda, 89170-… on Toyota) and often the module manufacturer number (Bosch 0 285 …, Autoliv 6xx…). Search by the vehicle manufacturer number.

How do I send the module?

Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before removal. Pack the module in an anti-static or plastic bag and a padded box, add your phone number and the VIN. You receive the address and instructions right after you order.
